Why do I react like that?

Sometimes our bodies react before we even understand what is happening.

A noisy classroom, a maths test, a strange sound in the night, or trying something new can cause big feelings and body sensations that can be confusing for children.

Through Zander’s story, children meet Big A and Big H, two helpful brain characters who make understanding these reactions a little easier.

Big A represents the amygdala, the part of the brain that is always on the lookout for danger and reacts quickly when something feels important or possibly unsafe.

Big H represents the hippocampus, helping bring in memories, facts and information about what has happened before.

Together, Big A and Big H help children discover that their brain is not working against them. It’s working hard to protect them.

With gentle storytelling, colourful characters and activities that encourage curiosity and conversation, Why Do I React Like That? gives children language for understanding big feelings and what is happening inside their bodies.

The book also includes interactive activities designed for children to explore alongside a parent, caregiver or trusted adult, helping turn the story into meaningful conversations and practical learning
